Despite its popularity, some patrons have mentioned that the frozen chips don’t quite measure up to the freshness of the fish. While cooked well, they can feel a bit standard compared to the standout main dishes.
Reservation options, while available, are also a topic of discussion; some guests wish for more flexibility regarding seating during peak hours. This can lead to longer wait times, especially during the bustling lunch and dinner rushes.
A few visitors have noted that the tartare sauce could use a homemade touch to truly complement the seafood offerings. Enhanced sauces could elevate the overall experience, particularly for those seeking that perfect balance with their meal.
Its a Sunday and the man working this evening (tall, slim Asian man) made the best fish and chips Ive had in many many years, if not ever, I was wonderfully surprised how great the food was. The crumbed fillet was huge, perfectly cooked and the scallops were better than in any restaurant. If I see this man working again it would be too tempting not to order.
IG: 2Fish1Chip It’s Fish & Chip Friday so I decided to pop into what is an institution in Thorndon, and grab a package from Starfish Fish & Chips to Go which opened when I started at NBNZ. Nestled in a prime spot at the Molesworth St entrance to New World. Order: Fish & Chips, Paua Fritter Cost: $23.20 The battered fish was Deep Blue Sea Cod. This puppy starts you off with a great crunchy batter that was music to the ears and definitive to the bite. The fillet itself was super soft to the bite and light on the tongue. I did question a small part of the fillet as it felt like it had more moisture than it should. The chips were your standard frozen bag bad boys but they were cooked well to get a green light. Portion was borderline for $5 but good enough. The Paua Fritter was a good’n with a great batter and good content. Finely minced flesh and onion, the two indistinguishable but all the same good flavour. Pricing isn’t that bad considering location. 25 years since opening, it’s still a solid joint dishing up your staple deep fried goods. Suuuussssh!
The best fish burgers in the world- and if they made them available in the evenings as well as lunch they'd double their business with me.
Fast, fresh and very tasty. Some of the very best kumara chips we’ve had. Just a hint if you are not from Wellington and you drove to Starfish: when you leave the New World parking lot, you will have to follow Molesworth right and north. Don’t take the first possible left off Molesworth if you want to go back to Wellington. That left will put you on the SH1 Motorway north, with no way to exit for at least 12 km, all the way up the hill at Johnsonville! Wait until Molesworth gets to Tinakori.
Best and cheapest fish and chips in wellington, only the sauce tartare could be much more better when homemade.
Best fish and chips experience in a long time! Such great service, really lovely workers. Everything was very well drained so it was still lovely and crispy after the trip home and wasn't soggy and greasy like other fish and chip shops. Delicious fish, average chips but a decent amount for 1 scoop (and great reheated in the air fryer). And big potato fritters!
Crumbed fish is huge and chips were perfect
